Drive

I have always loved to drive. If it has four tires and a steering wheel, I will try it. Even from an early age, I longed for the freedom, adventure and destination; similar to our walk with Jesus. In his letter to the church in Philippi, Paul tells us to look ahead and press on. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (3:13:14).

In the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy, we spent countless hours on driving. We were trained at high rates of speed, in adverse conditions and how to maneuver our cruisers with pinpoint accuracy. As part of our training, we learned valuable lessons that I believe can be carried over to our journey through this earth as Christians. First, we must look up, not down. It is also okay to glance in your side or rearview mirrors from time to time, but not stare. Instead, fix your gaze upon Jesus.

When the storms come, keep driving. Too many times we "pull over" in the middle of a storm. This can be dangerous on the road and in our walk with Christ. No matter how slow it may be, keep inching forward; even if you have to put your hazards on! And finally, when our speed and position become too much, let go of the wheel and reach for Jesus. Just as we learned in the academy, sometimes we have to stop clutching the wheel and allow Him to take control...
