Am I Worthy?

Like me, do you sometimes feel unworthy? Whether it be a role (job, family, activity) or a general feeling of inadequacy, most of us at one time or another have experienced self doubt. I am blessed to serve as the pastor at Otsego First Baptist Church and as an area director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Getting to meet so many amazing people of faith and biblical knowlege, I sometimes ask God, “Am I worthy?”

The Bible is filled with people just like you and me. Imperfect individuals who doubt themselves. The Apostle Luke (who was a physician) tells us about a servant of a Roman centurion who had fallen ill. The centurion sent a message asking for Jesus to come and heal his servant. As Jesus was nearing their house, the centurion sent friends to stop Him from coming. What was the centurion’s message to Jesus? He felt unworthy to have someone as wonderful as the Messiah to even be under the same roof. In an amazing example of faith, the centurion believed Jesus had the power to heal his servant by simply saying a word: HEALED!

Along with the centurion, we also find others in the Bible dealing with feelings of inadequacy. In the Book of Judges, Gideon came up with all kinds of reasons why he was unworthy after God selected him for mighty works. How about David? He was many things including an accomplice to murder, adulterer and a liar. Yet, look how God used him! And, can I tell you about a man named Paul? Before his conversion, Saul (Paul) had a job he enjoyed which consisted of hunting down Christian’s and having them violently tortured and killed. Surely, the chief of all sinners was unworthy to be chosen by God to do His work.

Like you, I sometimes feel unworthy. In those moments of self-doubt Jesus reminds me that we do not have to be worthy, just willing…
