Are You Living In The Dark?

Last Sunday, the title of my message was “how clean are you?” I talked about three types of clean: physical, mental and spiritual. The same is true about darkness in our lives. In John 8:12, Jesus refers to himself as light (both of the world AND of life).

Physical darkness is comprised of the actual physical location or environment we are in. How did you feel when you were surrounded by complete darkness? Were you afraid? Disoriented? Cold? The darkest physical environment I have ever been in is the woods at night; you literally cannot see your hand in front of your face. A (camp) fire not only provides light but it also gives warmth, security and direction. A campfire can literally save your life…just like Jesus.

Emotional darkness can be experienced through depression and/or a feeling of melancholy. All of us have felt depressed or sad at one time or another without really being able to say why. Although these feelings will sometimes need addressed through medical treatment, we can also find ways to combat this type of darkness through biblical wisdom. In Matthew 5:15-16, Jesus gives us some advice with the proven therapy of helping others. This allows us to stop focusing on ourselves and giving our time and attention to the needs of others.

Spiritual darkness is pervasive in our world. Those who have yet to turn their lives to Jesus and receive salvation live in spiritual darkness. The song Amazing Grace talks about once being blind but now able to see. Some even choose to return to the darkness of the world and backslide on their faith. It is important to remember we can see in faith what we cannot see through fear. Is there a time in your life when you were blinded by fear?

Do you feel like you are living in darkness? If so, look toward the light. Jesus can provide you security, direction and warmth…
