Defend The Defenseless

Each of us has a soft spot for those we believe to be in need. It could be an older member at your church, someone struggling to pay their bills or a young child that is suffering. For many law enforcement officers, including myself, a major motivation is to defend those that cannot defend themselves. To protect those that are being harmed and cannot fight for themselves. I have always (and will always) have these feelings toward a child that is being mistreated or abused. In reading God’s Word, I believe Jesus felt the same.
In The Book of Luke (17:2), Jesus is talking about the care and well being of children. Listen to His words, It would be better for him if a milestone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that should offend one of these little ones.
This passage was quoted in the movie Sound of Freedom that tells the true story of a Homeland Security agent that risks everything to rescue children sold into slavery and abuse, both sexual and physical. Before watching this movie, I strongly encourage you to prepare your mind and heart. Both the movie and topic of child abuse is dark and disturbing. It is also happening more in the United States than any other country and we, as Christians, cannot turn a blind eye to it.
God’s Word goes even further. In The Book of Psalms (82:3-4) we read these words, Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and the needy. Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.
These are not suggestions or options, they are commands. As we begin another school year, I ask you to join me in both prayer and action to defend the defenseless. To quote Sound of Freedom, God’s children are not for sale.
