Do Not Look Down

Have you ever experienced a time in your life when you told yourself or somebody else to not look down? Sometimes, as Christians we look down when we are afraid. Doing so is a natural human response. In the beginning, Adam and Eve listened to the whispers of the enemy and felt fear, shame and doubt. As Christians, what makes us look down?

Just like in the Book of Jeremiah (1:4-8 and 17), we can find ourselves afraid. God had called Jeremiah to be a prophet and to go and speak His word to an unbelieving and wicked people. In his fear, Jeremiah tried to make excuses saying he wasn’t able to do what God was asking. In doubting himself, he was also doubting God. But when Jeremiah stopped looking down and cast his eyes upon the Lord, his fear turned to trust!

Have you ever been embarrassed or ashamed to be a Christian? Ever had an opportunity to share your testimony or stand up for Jesus is a world of unbelievers but instead you looked down and held your head in shame? After Jesus died, Peter did that very thing just as Jesus said he would before the cock crowed three times (Matthew 26:33-35, 69-75).

What happens when we doubt Christ? At times, we doubt his love, guidance, strength and wisdom just as Thomas did in the Book of John (20:25-29). For it is when we look down we only see what is in front of us. When we look up, we can see what is ahead of us.

Are you “looking down” today? If so, I encourage you to cast your eyes upon Jesus. The view is so much better…
