I Was Blind

Blindness can come in many different forms. There is physical blindness where someone loses either part of or all of their eyesight. Of all the senses, God created in us I feel eyesight would be the hardest to be without. Being able to (physically) see is something many of us take for granted everyday. As someone who has experienced temporary blindness from an injury, the pain is almost unbearable.
There is also emotional blindness. This can occur when we fail to see the needs of those around us as well as the effect our actions have on others. Sadly, we often are the most emotionally blind to the ones we love the most. It is an easy trap to become complacent and not focus on the needs of those closest to us. Unfortunately, I have both experienced and expressed this kind of blindness. The hurt I felt and created have had lasting impacts on my life.
Lastly is spiritual blindness. The Bible speaks about this condition multiple times. Psalm 119:18 says, Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
I believe the writer is asking for his spiritual blindness to be lifted. For when we are spiritual blind, we cannot see things through the eyes of Christ. Our (spiritual) vision is limited, impaired and/or non-existent. We see life through the lying eyes of the world. It is here where the enemy will distort our vision to see things as we want to and not as how God intended. In the New Testament, Jesus speaks about His followers being able to see Him when the rest of the world cannot. In the Book of Matthew, Jesus goes on to tell His disciples, "Thou seeing, they do not see".
So the next time you hear or sing Amazing Grace, ask yourself this question: I once was blind, but do I now see?
