In The Blink Of An Eye

I spoke to a brother in Christ this week who experienced a very scary moment while driving in some pretty bad weather. Thankfully, by the hand of God, he is fine and no one else was injured. In our lives, many of us have experienced such a moment where we quickly realize how fragile live truly is. As we live day to day, it becomes so easy to take the gift of life for granted and to assume we are promised another day.

God's Word often speaks about the frailty of life. In fact, many of the individuals we read about in the Bible had similar moments to my friend. Some saved from death, some not. When we read about and/or experience these events, it is clear that our lives on earth are one breath away from being over.

James 4:14-15 tells us, Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. In this chapter, James is encouraging us to speak into other believers' lives who continually focus on tomorrow's schedule. How many of us "lose" a day given to us by focusing on a tomorrow that may never come? We have lost so many blessings by not living every moment of every day for Christ. Listen to the words of this old, beautiful hymn: This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. What better way to praise God and thank Him for the gift of today then to rejoice and be glad. Even during bad times, we can (and should) lift our hands to heaven and simply say, "thank you Lord".

Although I am not a theologian or scholar, I believe that God uses moments like these in our lives to remind us and prepare us for when He does call us home. When writing to the church in Corinth, the Apostle Paul talks about this very thing (1 Corinthians 15:52) In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. In an instant, a blink of the eye we will no longer be here.

Have you prepared your heart for that moment by living every day like it will be the last? If not, it is never too late to begin...
