Is It Okay to Question God?

Have you ever questioned God before? If we are being honest with ourselves, the answer is probably yes. Many times, we ask Him why something is happening in our lives or why He is allowing something to happen (usually a trial or challenge we are experiencing). The bible is full of real people asking real questions; many of them are directed towards God and His son Jesus.

Does God want us to ask questions? I believe He does for two reasons. The first is the very fact that He gave us the ability to think, reason and question. The second is the fact that He created us for fellowship with Him. A part of fellowship is conversation, and a part of conversation is being able to question one another. In the Book of Job alone there are 288 questions marks!

In Matthew, Jesus tells us to "ask, seek and knock." He encourages us to ask questions. Here is the key: it is not that we ask questions but how we ask them. Going back to the Book of Job, God allows His servant to ask as many questions as he wants to about why God is allowing him to go through some many horrible trials. It is when Job starts to question God in a disrespectful non-reverent manner when he is quickly put in his place.

As Christians, we can and should feel good about asking God questions. However, we must never become okay with questioning His authority, power or wisdom. The world has chosen to not only question God but also challenge Him; look how things have turned out...
