Is Your Blade Dull?

I have tried to stay in good shape (physically) most of my life. Although, it seems to be more difficult the older I get. One of the best full body exercises I have ever experienced is splitting wood. Not to mention the benefits of being outdoors and breathing fresh air!

When chopping wood, you learn very quickly that you have to keep your blade sharpened. If not, you will expend a lot of unnecessary energy and wear yourself out without achieving the goals you set out to reach. This happens in life as well. Many times, we get caught up in doing too much we forget about taking care of our bodies, minds and “tools” we use on a daily basis. And, before we know it we are swinging away at all of our tasks when we become exhausted half way through. Imagine being so tired in the middle of the day that you could literally fall asleep wherever and whatever you are doing. We spend countless energy trying to chop down trees with a dull axe!

God’s Word tells us in the Book of Ecclesiastes (10:10) If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength, but wisdom is profitable to direct.

In law enforcement, we were trained to work smarter, not harder. In other words, stop trying to do so many unnecessary things. Prioritize what is important, remember to practice self-care and scale down your chopping. If you feel exhausted and still do not think you are accomplishing anything, ask yourself this question: Is my schedule working for me or am I working for my schedule?
