Know Your Enemy

Like other military and law enforcement personnel, I have read and studied The Art of War written by Sun Tzu sometime in the 6th century BC. In his writings, Tzu talks about the importance of knowing your enemy. "If you know the enemy and know yourself, your victory will not stand in doubt."

There is so much biblical truth to this statement! While preparing for a battle, soldiers are trained in the objectives (priorities) of their enemy as well how they think and respond to counter attacks. As Christians, we are in the midst of the greatest battle known to man: a battle for our very souls and the souls of our loved ones. And as Christians, we have a very real enemy in Satan who has one job: to distance us from God and rob us of the blessings we can and should be experiencing through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

While working through hurt feelings, misunderstandings and conflicts among one another (sound familiar?) the Apostle Paul tells the church in Corinth (2 Corinthians 11) that they are being attacked by the enemy and need to fight back by showing love and forgiveness "Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices."

If we know ourselves as followers of Jesus and know how and why our enemy attacks, we can and will be more than conquerors in this life and in our eternal life to come...
