Lest We Forget

As I grow older, my mind is beginning to forget certain things. Although I am not sure if it is so much a case of memory loss or more so memory overload. Our days are stuffed full of too much information. Many are constantly on their phones or computers with a seemingly endless supply of information. When you add the events in day to day lives, it is no wonder we begin to omit things from our memory banks. Science and modern medicine have confirmed that our brains were created to only retain so much information.

As our country prepares to celebrate Memorial Day, it is a perfect time to remind ourselves of what is important. Psalm 103 (verses 2-5) tells us Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things...

From time to time we tend to forget (or take for granted) the blessings given to us by God. We wake up to them everyday and go to bed expecting the same tomorrow. We may say, "thank you Lord" every once in a while but then get easily caught up in all the other things going on in our lives. The enemy loves when we forget about God's mercy, grace and love. And one of the best ways for him to see that happen is to fill our mind with a lot of other stuff. To draw our time and attention away from Jesus by overloading our brains to the point of mental exhaustion.

To some degree, our country has seen the same thing happen with Memorial Day. Originally celebrated as Decoration Day, it is a day set aside to honor all those that have given the last full measure while serving in the military. To remember those individuals who gave their lives for a greater cause. Let us also not forget that Jesus gave that same sacrifice when he voluntarily hung on the cross for our sins.

Yes our lives are busy. My prayer is that life never becomes so busy that we fail to remember the sacrifice of those that died so that we may live. Lest we forget...
