Stop Playing Not To Lose

I consider Jesus to be the foundation of my life. Sports is a pillar. It teaches so many life lessons. Throughout the Bible there are several references to sports. One sports-based saying that can be linked to biblical truth is “playing not to loose. This is when a team is winning near the end of a game and becomes passive, instead of maintaining aggressive style or playing to win.

In the Book of Matthew (16:18), Jesus talks to Peter about the gates of hell. In biblical times, gates were massive, fortified structures meant to keep people in. They were defensive in nature. As Christians, we (sometimes) lead our lives playing not to lose. Instead of continuing to live/play with confidence because our victory has already been secured we hide Jesus behind the gates of our mouths, hearts, homes and churches.

In the Book of Revelation (3:20), Jesus knocked at the door; he pursued and did not hide. In the Book of Hebrews , chapter ten, we again read about not playing to lose. The writer of Hebrews tells us not to shrink back from our faith in times of trouble.

Are you playing to win?
