Stop Slouching

Webster Dictionary defines the word slouching as the action or fact of standing, moving, or sitting in a lazy, drooping way.

When our kids were growing up, both Lovel and I would often remind them not to slouch. In part, we did this because of their height. Ethan grew to be 6’7” while Madeline grew to be 5’9”. Having a correct posture is good for your spine especially when you are above average height. Many times, a taller person will try to slouch down in order to fit into the crowd. I can tell you from personal experience it is not always easier being bigger than everyone else, especially growing up!

Along with good posture, we also wanted our children to be proud of who they were. To not be ashamed of the height and body God had given them. The Bible speaks of this approach for all believers. As Christians, we should not be ashamed of Jesus and who we are in Him. We also should not slouch as we walk through a world full of naysayers and unbelievers. One of the things I share with athletes and coaches I come into contact with in my ministry with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is to walk boldly in your faith and that it takes courage to stand out of the crowd.

The writer of Proverbs tells us in the 28th chapter that The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as lions. In a world that seems to be filling up with more slouching sheep being led around, I encourage you to stand up straight, put your shoulders back, look up and follow the true Shepherd in boldness and confidence…
