As we continue to prepare for and celebrate the arrival of Christmas many churches, like Otsego First Baptist, make Advent a part of services. But what is Advent? Why do Christians celebrate it? Is it even found in the Bible? Although the word advent is not found in the Bible, the practice of Advent is filled with biblical themes and spiritual preparations for Christmas. In addition to the lighting of candles during the four weeks leading up to Christmas, many of our other holiday traditions have religious beginnings. Wreaths, hanging of the greens and even Chrismon (Christmas) trees have deep ties to the celebration of Jesus' birth. The evergreen vegetation symbolizes everlasting life that Jesus offers to all who receive Him as their Savior.
There are four themes included in the celebration of Advent: Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. Each theme is highlighted with the lighting of a particular candle along with certain passages from the Bible. Christians celebrating Advent should understand the importance of being focused on scripture, the anticipation of Christ's return and spiritual readiness.
The first theme of Advent is HOPE. This symbolizes the anticipation believers felt when waiting on the arrival of their Messiah. Throughout the Old Testament and beginning of the New Testament, we read God's Word referring to the arrival of Jesus. In the Book of Isaiah, we read about the coming of a Messiah. Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (7:14).
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace (9:6).
The second theme of Advent is PEACE. Jesus speaks to us about this during His time on earth. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27). The third theme of Advent is JOY. With this candle, we remember the joy within the knowledge of Christ's second coming.
The fourth, and final, theme of Advent is LOVE. God's love shown through the birth of Christ. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved (John 3:16).
As you enjoy this time of the year and prepare for the birth of our Savior, I encourage you to remember the true why...
