Big Things In Small Packages

Do you know the smallest book in the Bible? 2 John has only 13 verses (followed closely by the third epistle of John with 14 verses). I believe from the Apostle John’s second epistle, we can retrieve one of God’s greatest messages: love and truth.

Verse one speaks about love in the truth. Who is our truth? In John 14:6, Jesus refers to Himself.  I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. In verse three, John speaks about both truth in love.

In verses five and six, John tells us the importance of both truth and love and how they are not new ideas; but have been commanded by God from the very beginning. He then goes on to define what is love. Verses seven and eight provide a stern warning to the readers while verse nine describes not having truth and love in our lives.

In the Book of Luke, Jesus tells us that the smallest may be the greatest, and said to them, Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For he who is least among you all will be great (9:48).

By design, God places the biggest message of the Bible in the smallest book. Throughout His Word, we see “big” people in what the world perceives as small packages. David was a lowly shepherd boy when he stepped forward to take on Goliath. Moses was a slave with a speech impediment. Mary was a shy 17 year old girl. And the smallest of them all? Jesus was a baby from lowly Nazareth born in a manger.
