Child Of God

I have always marveled at the importance Jesus placed on children during His earthly ministry and the heart He has given me for our young people. Whether it was growing up, coaching sports or in my law enforcement career, I have also felt a special burden to protect children.

Reading God's Word, we see several examples of Jesus interacting with kids. In the Book of Mark (10:13-16), Jesus even rebukes His disciples when they try to keep the children from being around Him.  Then they brought little children to Him, that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them.

As Christians, we are commanded to come to Christ in a child-like manner. Matthew 18:1-4, Jesus says that unless we are converted and become as little children, we will not enter the kingdom of heaven. In other words, we have to receive Jesus and His kingdom through the eyes of a child. As a child trusts a parent, we must also fully trust Christ. We must also fully accept Jesus as He is, without taking away or adding anything to Him (or His will for our lives). We must love Him with the unconditional love only found in a child. As adults, we always seem to want something in return. And lastly, we must desire Christ like a newborn desires nourishment (1Peter 2:2).

When we first accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, we are unable to understand portions of the bible. However, as we mature spiritually we are able to gain more and more understanding of scripture and God's will for our lives. In our spiritual infancy we looked at things through the eyes of the world. As maturing Christians, we should be looking through the eyes of Jesus!
