Celebrating Advent

As we draw nearer to Thanksgiving and the celebration of Advent, it is important to understand the significance of both. The origins of Thanksgiving can be found in the original settling of this continent. Individuals of all races, beliefs and backgrounds came gathered together for fellowship, food and friendship. The main reason for this (and all Thanksgiving) gathering was to give thanks for the many blessings of life.

The last Sunday of November also begins the period of Advent for many Christians. Advent is celebrated during the four Sundays leading up to the birth of Jesus. Each Sunday, many congregations will read passages from the bible telling us of the Savior's birth. Some will also signify each Sunday by the lighting of a candle. Many also believe that the four candles of an advent wreath represent: faith, hope, joy and love. Not only does Advent serve as a reminder of why we celebrate Christmas; it also is a reminder of the second coming of Jesus when he will return to this earth to claim final victory.

I encourage you to focus on your many blessings during this time of the year as we all focus on the events leading up to the greatest gift God could ever give: His Son.

May God bless the rest of your week...
