While some seem to struggle with the definition of a woman, the Bible provides both a beautiful and true representation of what God had in mind when He created Eve. In the Book of Proverbs (31:10-31), we read one such description, Who can find a virtuous wife?

For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her;

So he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil. All the days of her life.

She seeks wool and flax, And willingly works with her hands. She is like the merchant ships,

She brings her food from afar. She also rises while it is yet night, And provides food for her household, And a portion for her maidservants. She considers a field and buys it; From [c]her profits she plants a vineyard. She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms.

She perceives that her merchandise is good, And her lamp does not go out by night.

She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hand holds the spindle.

She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.

She is not afraid of snow for her household, For all her household is clothed with scarlet.

She makes tapestry for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, And supplies sashes for the merchants. Strength and honor are her clothing;

She shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness. She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her: Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all. Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, And let her own works praise her in the gates.

I believe a woman's hand is one of God's miracles. How something can be be strong, soft, comforting and reassuring all at once. A mother's hand has supernatural healing powers! It always surprises and amazes me when someone speaks about how the Bible somehow degrades or devalues woman. From woman in the Old Testament like Deborah and Ruth, to mothers in the New Testament like Elizabeth and Mark, God chose and placed great importance on women for specific reasons. He gave them responsibilities, knowledge and skill that men are incapable of. Why do you think God chose to use Mary to bring Jesus into this world? In His infinite power, He could have created His Son from the dust and breathed life into Him. Rather, God knew the importance of the relationship between mother and child and the role Mary would play in Jesus' life. Her blood flowed through His veins.

Women were created with God-given uniqueness. Women were created to do everything a man cannot do. The lioness does not try to be a lion. She embraces her role as a lioness. She is powerful, strong and nurturing. Do not mistake her meekness for weakness. The world needs more kind, compassionate, humble, faithful, persevering, confident, fierce, bold, pure and tender-hearted woman.

Whether you are a birth mother, adopted mom, or a beautiful soul that has shown motherly love to child in desperate need, I hope you remember today and every day that God created you specifically and loves your heart. Happy Mothers Day!
