Fort Jesus

My favorite movie genre is a good western, many of which depict the U.S. Cavalry protecting the untamed west from danger. In many of these movies, there is a fort that houses the military, their families and all those seeking refuge from danger. Even today, our military bases has the word fort in their names. Forts like Benning, Campbell, Bragg and Pendleton stir the memories of those that have served and been stationed there. Each is a stronghold and, for some, a place of refuge. These forts are equipped to fight off the enemy and provide for those that seek safety within its' walls.

As Christians, we also have a fortress in Jesus. In the Book of Psalms, we read about Him being my refuge and my fortress (91:1-2). In verse 18:2, Jesus is described as my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer. The Book of Proverbs (18:10) says, The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe.

Like a military fort in a hostile world, Jesus is also a place of safety. We find protection in His presence, His Word and His church. He protects us from those wanting to do us harm. He is with us when we walk through the fire and His church is a place of refuge for those that are in need of a safe refuge.

Jesus' fortress is also fortified on all four sides. He can and will strengthen your weakest wall (because that is where the enemy will try to attack us the most). And like the watch tower of a military fort, Jesus has a 360 degree view of our lives. He sees everything, even when we do not. And finally, Fort Jesus is a beacon of hope; a light signaling a place of safety and refuge. As believers, it is our duty to occupy (or man) this fort for those that are searching for the protection and security that only Christ can provide.

We are living in dangerous and perilous times. Are you living inside the safety and security of a personal relationship with Jesus?
