Looking For Zacchaeus

By the world’s standards, Zacchaeus was a big shot; he was rich, had a position of power and authority yet he was too small to clearly see Jesus. Just like Zacchaeus, our place and position in the world can also keep us from seeing Christ. Because he was too short to see over the crowd, Zacchaeus climbed a tree. Do you think Jesus would have still seen him if he had not? Of course! However what we do learn in this passage is Jesus recognizes our efforts.

Did you notice Jesus called to Zacchaeus by name, knew exactly where to find him AND went to where he was. Knowing Zacchaeus was a sinner and hated by many, Jesus still invited him to spend time together; simple acts of kindness and respect by going to his home. Like Jesus, we all have or will have a Zacchaeus in our lives. Someone looking for hope, direction or simply a kind word. The world is full of Zacchaeuses!

Do not be alarmed, God does not expect you or I to save the entire world (that is His job!). He does, however, invite and expect us to go out of our way sometimes to meet a sinner in need where they are. It is compassion instead of comparison (they do not look or act like me).

As you look for a Zacchaeus in your life, it is important to remember the old adage: “You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make them drink”. Remind yourself that we can plant a seed, but God is the One who waters it.

See you in church tomorrow…
