Thermometer Faith

For many of us, it has been and continues to be extremely cold. The large snow that fell almost two weeks ago is still very much present. While recognizing the beauty and need for snow as a part of God's creation, I must confess I am beyond ready for it to go away. While we look forward to warmer temperatures, I am sure that the high humidity of summer may have some of us wishing otherwise. Perhaps we need a change in climate?
Many times, our faith can be like a thermometer. Fluctuating on a daily basis and reflecting the "weather" we are currently experiencing. How easy it is to have strong faith during times of favorable temperatures. And, even easier to have little faith when experiencing the coldness of life. Just like the weather here in Ohio, we may even see extreme changes every hour! Why is our faith is so unstable at times. The answer may very well be found in the object(s) in which you place your trust. Whether it be a relationship, a job, finances or some material possession, we often are disappointed and (quickly) loss faith when trust is broken. Our thermometer plummets and we cry out to God asking why.
Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us, Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. The key word in this passage is all. Too many times, we choose to trust Him with some things, but not all. Similarly, we also choose to acknowledge Him with only certain decisions in our lives. It is in making these decisions, that we experience thermometer faith. Like the changing of the weather, we never get to enjoy all of God's blessings because our faith is dependent on people or things other than Him.
Maybe, just maybe, it is time to change from a thermometer to a thermostat faith with our setting dialed into Jesus...
