Taking Root

There is a well-known and worthwhile saying: Grow where you are planted. It encourages us to flourish where we are instead of thinking where we could be. In other words, be happy with what you (currently) have. As Christians, we are to be rooted (planted) in God's Word. It should be what we base ALL aspects of our lives on. In truth, many will try to pick and choose what parts are bible based and what parts are with the world.

David who wrote a majority of The Book of Psalms opens up with the strength of the righteous in chapter 1 (verses 1-3): Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

David, speaking from experience, is asking who and what we are prioritizing in our lives. He tells us we will be blessed if our social circles are firmly rooted in God's Word. Does this mean we should not interact with non-believers? God forbid! How else would we share the good news of Jesus with those who desperately need to hear it? What David is telling us is to be careful who we invest a majority of our time and energy in and who we are seeking advice from. Have you noticed in your life that your actions and attitudes will sometimes mirror those you are around the most? Being around negative people all of the time will ultimately impact your views and outlook in a negative way. It is the same with sin.

Reread verse 3: He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. In other words, no matter the season of life or challenges/difficulties you are currently facing God can and will bless your life if you are firmly rooted in His Word.

No matter how 2025 has started for you, I encourage you to plant yourself in His living water...
